Testing
How often should we have our church wiring examined and tested?

The normal interval for installation testing in a church is five years, except where there is a public entertainment license where it has to be done every year. It is also recommended that a manual inspection is done by an experienced electrician every year.

Who can do this testing?

The regulations state that a suitably trained and competent individual should undertake all testing work. All CES's tester are fully qualified, as well as being very experienced in working on church installations.

What if testing is forgotten?

Electrical testing is part of the church warden's and elders duty of care, as are all health and safety matters. If the duty of care is ignored it is possible that the warden's could be criminally liable for death or injury resulting. There are also instances of insurance companies disputing claims if the building does not have the appropriate test certificates.

Can you explain why we have been told that we need to test all our electrical appliances in the church and hall?
As well as testing the mains wiring the electricity at work regulations (yes this does cover churches!) recommends that all electrical appliances and their leads and plugs are inspected regularly for damage and are tested regularly using a portable appliance tester to make sure that they are safe to use.
